Toronto's oldest cocktail bar turns into a unique fitness studio

Sweat and Tonic is not the new cocktail in the vibrant and cosmopolitan Toronto, but the boutique fitness studio just opened in the charming location that have hosted the most historic cocktail bar in the Canadian city. The facility is located in the Ryrie Building, built in 1899 as an investment by Ryrie Brothers Jewelers, the most prestigious retailer in the jewelry industry. In 1947, the doors opened at Silver Rail, Toronto's first cocktail lounge and one of the city's favourite places for events. Sweat & Tonic opened in the same building on 16 November this year.

Today Sweat and Tonic maintains the same spirit and atmosphere as the original building and offers a full range of training experiences through a program of more than 150 lessons per week in 3 different studios on the three floors dedicated to fitness and wellness services. On the ground floor, guests can relax with healthy snacks and smoothies in the same space that once housed the cocktail bar.

There was a significant gap in Toronto's fitness market. No one was able to offer high intensity yoga, spinning and training classes under one roof, not to mention the possibility of socializing or relaxing, which is why I decided to build such a place. The name is inspired by my favourite drink, Gin Tonic, then the idea slowly grew to become better than I ever dreamed. Founder David Ingram imagined the concept in 2016, when he visited several cities around the world to take inspiration and to try various types of classes and innovative training formats.
The Sweat and Tonic environment was designed by Cutler, an award-winning Vancouver-based interior design and architecture studio and built by GAMA Construction in Toronto. In developing the design concept, Cutler carefully considered the building's history, innovative technologies and equipment that would be used to bring the best of fitness and wellness under one roof.
