Ski time: the best skiing holiday destinations for snow lovers

Skiing is the winter sport par excellence. Italy, with its smooth hills, its peaks always covered in snow - a nice white sprinkle in summer, an ivory sea in winter – offers a wide variety of skiing holiday destinations, both in the Alps and the Apennines. However, only a few rightfully can claim to compete with world-renowned skiing destinations.

In this article, we will try to answer a simple question:

Which are the best places to ski in Italy, in Europe or in the rest of the world?

Therefore, we will describe several of the most popular, for both their slopes and their prestige, skiing holiday destinations in Italy, Europe and the world.

The best places to ski in Italy

Italy offers a wide variety of ski destinations for people wishing to ski all year round, even in the summer. For this reason, it is advisable to make a small selection, in order to select the best places, with the most beautiful views, the most beautiful locations and the most exclusive hotels:

One of the top destinations, located on the Italian side of the Alps, is Breuil-Cervinia, in the Aosta Valley. This resort is famous all over the world for its snow, which, due to its high altitude, is perfect all year round, even in summer. The Matterhorn, the most elegant rock in Europe, dominates the delightful village at an altitude of 2,000 metres.

Cortina d'Ampezzo

Nonethless, if fashion and luxury is what you are looking after, then you don’t need to go any further than Cortina d'Ampezzo, in Veneto. The "queen of the Dolomites", as many call it, is a destination for lovers of luxury, and its fame precedes it.

High fashion boutiques and luxury restaurants populate Corso Italia, offering an alternative for those who want take off the skis for a few hours.

The site of the 1956 Winter Olympics offers wonderful descents and landscapes. Among the 12 destinations in the "Best of the Alps" ranking, it offers 140 km of slopes and historical paths, such as the "Tour of the Great War". The main ski areas are Faloria, Cristallo, Pocol-Tofana and Cinque Torri.

Livigno, in Valtellina, is the realm of duty-free shopping. This privilege is very much enjoyed by the tourists choosing this resort, who then choose to come back every winter season. Obviously, it is not only a place for fashion addicted: the area offers 115 kilometres of slopes, for 75 square kilometres of skiable area.

Here, novice and experienced skiers have to compete for the slopes, while freeskiers and snowboarders can give vent to their "madness" in the various snowparks, such as Mottolino, Livigno Park 3000, Amerikan and Woodpark. If you want to take a break from the many winter sports, tourists can relax in the spas of Bormio.

The best places to ski in Europe

The Old Continent offers just as many, sometimes even more prestigious, ski destinations, sometimes just on the other side of the Italian Alps:

Kitzbühel, Austria

Kitzbühel, Austria, with almost a thousand hiking trails, is a very attractive destination for tourists all year round. However, in winter the main activity remains unsurprisingly skiing, with 215 kilometres of perfectly maintained slopes in the mountains of Kitzbüheler Horn and Hahnenkamm.

Kitzbühel remains a unique Alpine gem, perfect for the whole family, including those who do not like skiing, because it offers a unique range of activities: from walks in the woods to shopping, including spa tourism. Here you will find excellent hotel chains with state of the art wellness centres.

Zermatt, Switzerland

If Switzerland is the country of ski by default, then Zermatt is the ski resort par excellence. Here, everything is all about the snow, simply perfect everywhere. Zermatt is not only impressive for the excellent condition of its slopes but also for its eco-sustainability. The "pearl of the Canton of Valais" is an exclusively pedestrian mountain destination.

Here, cars are not allowed, everything runs on electricity.

From here, you can also admire the most beautiful view of the Matterhorn.

Ruka, Finland

Moving away from the Alps there’s Ruka, in Finland. This unmissable ski destination, with its extremely smooth slopes, is a cross-country skiing heaven. Here, you can explore the magnificent snowy forests of the Finnish country and enjoy a unique spectacle: the incredible Northern Lights.

Formigal, Spain

When it comes to skiing, perhaps Spain may not look like the ultimate winter holiday destination. Nevertheless, by visiting the ski resort of Formigal you may change your mind. This is the destination for all Spaniards who love to ski but don't want to go too far. This resort is located in the Tena Valley, in the middle of the Aragonese Pyrenees, and can boast 164 kilometres of slopes, respectively 130 for alpine skiing and 34 for cross-country skiing.
Natural snow isn't always there, but artificial snow offers an excellent alternative. The main slopes are located in 4 valleys: Tres Hombres-Sextas Valley, Izas-Sarrios Valley, Anayet Valley and Portalet Valley.

Val Thorens, France

France, a bit like Switzerland, Austria and Italy, is dotted with ski resorts perfect for snow lovers. Among the many resorts to consider, there is Val Thorens, in the 3 Valleys region. The quality of the snowpack, for the constantly groomed slopes, the technology of the lifts, among the best of the Old Continent, are all features that make the station, among the highest in Europe, a very sought after destination. As a cherry on top, the majestic view offered by the Péclet Glacier, defined as "the most beautiful landscape in the Alps" offers a view of 1,000 Alpine peaks.

The best places to ski in the world

For overseas ski lovers, Europe is but one of the continents you can visit. If you like adventure, and you don't mind long flights, Canada, the United States and Japan are extremely charming winter holiday destinations, each with its own uniqueness, for a truly amazing winter holiday.

Whistler-Blackcomb, British Columbia

Whistler-Blackcomb, British Columbia, Canada, is withing the must-see holiday destinations for skiing. Canada overseas is famous for its "powder snow", a powdery, light, soft snow: in a word, unique. Whistler-Blackcomb is 135 kilometres from Vancouver. This town in British Columbia is characterized by endless landscapes of snowy trees one can easily fall in love with.

Aspen, Colorado

Europeans consider Aspen in the United States as the "Cortina d’Ampezzo of America". Beautiful and worldly, but perfect for the whole family. This is thanks to the many activities that can be practiced on the snow, from skiing to snowmobiling, without mentioning shopping. As the name suggests, Aspen’s landscape is filled with aspen forests. Many off-piste skiers choose to get lost in the dense and adventurous forests of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

Niseko, Hokkaido

If you prefer to head eastward, perhaps you may consider Japan as your destination of choice. The slopes on the Pacific island of Hokkaido offer skiers a great alternative.

You can find plenty of snow also in the middle of the ocean.

Niseko's landscape
This makes the ski resort a sensational place, the perfect landscape to be described in a novel. The most famous ski area is Niseko. Here, you will find the longest slopes and the most modern lifts. Another island resort that is perfect for skiing, but less well known, is Kamui. Tomamu, on the other hand, is the most bizarre one, with its tower-hotels and its igloo village.
