Why exercise makes us happy

During physical activities, our brains increase their production of serotonin, adrenaline and endorphins, causing a state of well-being and a feeling of invincibility that makes us happy.

Every year on 20th March, the world celebrates the International Day of Happiness, a national day established by the United Nations in 2012 to highlight the pursuit of happiness as a fundamental human goal, thereby promoting sustainable development and the well-being of all people. A study conducted in 15 European countries researched the relationship between exercise and happiness, showing that being active increases resilience to emotional upheaval, thus ensuring greater satisfaction and serenity. In 2019, researchers at the University of Michigan analysed data from existing studies estimating that people with an active lifestyle are up to 52% more likely to be happy, a percentage that decreases as people become more sedentary.
In the same year, Yale and Oxford Universities related a person's happiness to the number of hours spent exercising. According to the research, the maximum benefit on mood is obtained with 3-5 sessions per week lasting between 30 and 60 minutes.

What is happiness made of?

Endorphin and serotonin are the hormones responsible for our happiness: they can put us in a good mood, reduce feelings of pain and calm us. Very often, after completing a workout, we can't wait to do another one, or we simply feel a growing confidence in our abilities. At the root of these phenomena are specific biochemical processes that increase the production of the so-called hormones of happiness: endorphins, dopamine and serotonin.
Increasing the frequency of your heartbeat stimulates the production of these hormones, and by achieving the perfect synergy between dopamine, endorphins, blood pressure and breathing, you can enter the psychological state that is known in sports jargon as a competitive trance, which enables you to perform at your best. Endorphins enable us to perform at our best even when the body and mind would like to give up due to its anaesthetic effect; dopamine produced by the brain (in a very short time when performing high-intensity exercises) raises the level of concentration and attention making training easy and fun.

At the end of the workout, dopamine levels drop, while serotonin levels rise, providing a sense of inner well-being. Given all the benefits, it is natural to want to experience this feeling of wellbeing and satisfaction again, so you enter a virtuous circle in which the more you train, the more dopamine is produced and the more frequently you feel satisfied. Apart from the obvious physical benefits, such as lower blood pressure and weight loss, the sense of accomplishment after each workout will give you more and more confidence in yourself and your abilities. Over time, we will become fitter, more athletic and more optimistic: strong, satisfied and above all happy!

Running to reduce stress

All athletes feel a rush of positive hormones at the end of their training, and runners know the euphoria of running very well. Running improves the structure and function of the nervous system and exposing oneself to light while running is an anti-depressant therapy, as it promotes the synthesis of serotonin.
It has also long been shown that listening to a song can also increase serotonin levels, putting us in a good mood during training and increasing our performance during the workout. Sessions focusing on short, intense exercises also help to reduce levels of the so-called stress hormone cortisol, both physically and mentally in the long term.
