How to train during a business trip

Recurring business trip can destroy any good intentions to keep in shape: intercontinental flights, jet lag, back-to-back meetings and tight schedules.

In April 2017 CWT conducted a survey of 1,900 people who had a business trip more than four times for work in the last 12 months found that 54% of those who travel for business believe that travel destroys their training routines. The best at sticking to their training? Asians. The worst? Europeans. Not only that: according to a Harvard Business Review study, a life full of business trips can also be risky for your health.

The study shows a correlation between the regularity of travel. In the United States in 2016, 500 million tickets for domestic flights were classified as business trip - and the tendency to be overweight, anxiety attacks, depression, alcohol addiction and sleep disorders for those who travel more than 14 days a month. Being able to stay fit during those days - perhaps on the other side of the world means your fitness and wellness routine can be complicated.

But it's an effort that pays off. Yes, because if the company's "road warrior" not only deserves a hotel room that is as welcoming as a house and as productive as an office - given that they will certainly work there - they must also deserve a space where they can keep training.

5 tips for training on a business trip

Our advice for those who travel a lot? Try to get hotels from the company with a gym, possibly open 24 hours a day, bring the right clothing, and avoid the temptations like junk food. These are the basics: here are some tips.

1. Hotels with fitness centre

When you are out on business trip the ideal would be to have a fitness centre available in the hotel where you are staying, but often you do not have the opportunity, in that case looking for a gym or a closer fitness centre is the ideal solution to keep training. In this case, you will have to pay a daily fee to access the centre but it could be a great opportunity to destress the mind and maybe meet new people.

2. Explore the place where you are running

If you know the name of the facility where you will be staying during your business trip you can still plan a training routine. If it's a well-known chain, they will be able to help you by giving you advice on the nearest routes and places to run outdoors. If the hotel can’t help you with any advice, then try to research the neighbourhood areas close-by where you might have the opportunity to work out (parks, cycle paths, etc ...).

3. Find the perfect moment for your workout

The best time to train during a business trip is at dawn: a gym open 24 hours a day is essential, so if you don't have it, run, with the advice of a running concierge or with a route suggested by running apps. In this case, both for those who choose the gym and for those who choose to run, pay attention to the time zone: if you travel from Italy to the United States (or west) the time zone is our friend and waking up at dawn, thanks to jet lag, could be easier. If you are travelling from Italy to the east, the opposite is true. In this case, it’s better to move the training routine to the evening.

4. Discovering new ways to train

Doing physical activity, even for those who are subject to do a business trip is a great way to relieve stress, avoiding consolation with food. It would be interesting to consider the fact of being in a different country and outside the usual scenarios as an opportunity to experiment with new disciplines, perhaps typical of the places where you are.

5. Watch out for food

When you are on a business trip, especially on business trips where you are in a hurry and very often busy, you don't pay much attention to food. Trying out the typical dishes of the place is a must, but without overdoing it. Fast food should certainly be avoided, especially if you do not have the opportunity to do physical activity. In the same way you should avoid fasting or sacrifice some of the main meals. Are recommended healthy snacks to put in your bag or backpack to be able to take out during the day if necessary such as apples or dried fruit.
