Wellness economy: strong growth worldwide

The Global Wellness Summit (GWS), the foremost gathering of international leaders in the over $4 trillion global wellness economy, takes place for the first time in in Italy. The global forum begun this morning at the Technogym Village in Cesena, the wellness campus of the world-leading company specializing in products, technologies and digital solutions for fitness and wellness.
Technogym launched the wellness concept over 25 years ago when everybody in the industry was only talking about fitness. Over the years, wellness has radically changed the industry by transforming it from a niche targeting only sport enthusiasts to a sector able to engage the whole population - said Nerio Alessandri, Technogym’s Founder and CEO.

Research Highlights

From 2015-2017, the wellness economy grew 6.4% annually, nearly twice as fast as global economic growth (3.6%). Wellness expenditures ($4.2 trillion/€3.6 trillion) are now more than half as large as total global health expenditures ($7.3 trillion/€6.3 trillion). The wellness industry now represents 5.3% of global economic output.

When it comes to Italy, the research shows that spa industry revenues jumped nearly one-third from 2015-2017 to the fact that Italy ranks 7th worldwide for workplace wellness expenditures and 5th for thermal/mineral springs market in the world.

  • The global wellness tourism market is also fast growing and now worth over $639/€552 billion worldwide - $211 billion/€182 billion in Europe, and almost $13.4/€12 billion in Italy that ranks as the 10th largest national wellness tourism market in the world.
  • Real estate market that incorporates intentional wellness elements into its design, materials and building (and amenities and programming) is growing fast, over $134 billion/€116 billion worldwide.
  • Growing, but with great potential for further development, the workplace wellness market –workplace wellness programs - valued at $47.5/€41 billion.
