Fig Power Bar

The undisputed protagonist of the table from June to September, the fig enjoys a millennial history, which would even place it as a forbidden fruit instead of the apple in the garden of Adam and Eve. Why? Well if it hadn't been a fig tree, why would the two biblical protagonists have used its beautiful leaves to cover their nudity after their original sin?

The first testimonies of its cultivation were in Mesopotamia, the place from which the diffusion in all the Mediterranean basin had started. Legend has it that Rea Silvia abandoned his twins Romulus and Remus in a basket on the Tiber River, the basket was miraculously stranded under a fig tree that grew on its banks and since then the plant became sacred to the Romans. The Greeks were greedy not only for its heavenly flavour, but also for its invigorating qualities for both the body and the spirit. According to Plato, eating figs even increased his intelligence. We trust in history and use figs, in their dehydrated variant, to make a homemade bar to be consumed whenever the body requires full energy.

An energy bar with genuine ingredients

Since many of the bars on the market are full of sugar and artificial flavours, the idea of producing them at home with genuine ingredients is not only rewarding for your wallet, but also your health. Instead of the common sucrose, we can use barley and make the most of the natural properties of figs. Those who are captivated by the "DIY" mood can even buy fresh figs and dry them in the oven at 50 degrees until they are without water. In this way, they can be stored for a long time and used as needed. For those who want to get a bar in a few minutes, you can buy readymade dried figs, as long as there is no added sugar.
With regards to malt, it is worth remembering its advantages over sugar: it promotes the proper functioning of the intestine, thanks to starch, which during digestive processes combats fermentation, has purifying properties for the liver and helps to eliminate excess toxins. Finally it represents an energy source with high bioavailability and yield that makes it ideal to meet the increased needs during long training sessions or competitions.

Figs, protagonists from June to September

Even figs, in addition to being an excellent ready to use energy source, they have many other properties: rich in polyphenols and natural antioxidants they help to maintain young cells of our body and help prevent different types of tumours including breast, colon and prostate. They have an anti-inflammatory power, support the immune system and thanks to their high probiotic and fibre content, they are perfect for the health of the intestine and the digestive system in general. They are also bombs of potassium, magnesium, iron and copper and are a good source of vitamins A, E, K. Once soaked in water for a few moments, they should simply be blended with oat flakes and tahini, which in addition to supporting the dough, gives the mixture a delicious toasted flavour that balances the sweetness of the fruit. For those who have never used it, tahini is a paste made from sesame seeds which is very common in Middle Eastern cuisine.

Sesame stands out for its high amount of methionine and tryptophan - two amino acids - vitamins B1 (Thiamine), B2 (Riboflavin), PP (Niacin), Pyridoxine (B6) and folates. Among the fat soluble, however, the most important is - albeit in small doses - vitamin E, which together with sesame preserves the oil from going off, this vitamin gives the seeds and sesame oil precious antioxidant properties. Even for tahini, the rule of quality applies: often you can find products with various vegetable oils. Our advice is to choose 100% pure products or made with only sesame seeds.

Fats, sugars, fibres and protein: Our homemade bar seems to contain everything we need before the toughest workouts or most challenging days. We can add whole seeds to make each bite crunchy. All you have to do is bake it in the oven for a few minutes and then cut it into small pieces once it has cooled down. In small portions, it also represents an excellent snack to take to the office, also capable of convincing junk food lovers to step away from the vending machines.
