Present and future of fitness with VR - virtual reality training

Will we soon stop workout in gyms for other spaces and contexts with virtual and augmented reality? For many, this may be the future, but for some big sports clubs, this is already the present. A virtual arena where hockey is already possible, for example, by greatly reducing the costs and space needed for ice hockey players. A technology: that of training in virtual reality, but that can also be used for many other sports.

At the recent CES 2019 in Las Vegas, a virtual reality platform for hockey players, one of the most beloved sports by Americans, was presented. It is an expensive sport, like many others, because it requires indoor energy-intensive infrastructure with high maintenance and operating costs. It is also one of the many sports where in addition to physical and muscular workout, the mental side is of great importance, both in terms of concentration and in terms of motivation, responsiveness, vision, the speed of assessment and decision, etc.

In virtual reality most of the activities are risk-free and, therefore, the athletic gesture is clean, linear, easy to grasp and analyse.

A sport in which training for the body and mind is never enough, which is often difficult to do on the field. Hence the idea, developed in the Czech Republic with a strong focus on the U.S. market, to create a training platform in augmented reality to allow athletes to train outside the ice rinks.

What you need for virtual reality training

To make this virtual reality platform work and train as in a real arena you need:

  • a space of less than 25 square meters
  • 3D software for virtual reality
  • the equipment needed to immerse yourself in a complete, realistic, usable and repeatable training experience at any time.

A complete training experience, based on about fifty possible exercises in virtual reality and a dozen preset training plans, which allow you to improve reflexes and reaction times, the speed of decision, advance in movements, game intelligence and the ability of the brain to process information in multitasking mode.

What are the future developments for virtual reality in sport?

Everything as if the ice of the arena were available at any time. The example of this new digital platform for hockey will not remain isolated. There are many sports that can benefit from workout systems in virtual reality, augmented or mixed that can allow, in addition to significant cost savings, the convenience of being able to be used outside the sports facilities and increase opportunities to train the mind and learn to better manage the emotions, as well as the body.

In motorsports these virtual systems have already been in use for some time, both in the simplest and in the professional versions, in the form of expensive and sophisticated simulators, able to faithfully reproduce not only the driving experience, but also the acceleration and effort needed to keep on track and to make good times on every possible circuit and track. The same methodology with virtual reality is used for airplane pilots and other activities, including non-sporting activities.

What is certain is that these platforms combine in themselves many different functions and can be a valuable addition to the work done in the field and during sports competitions. More often during traditional training, in fact, these new methodologies can collect a large amount of data and provide sophisticated analysis tools.

The most interesting aspect of virtual reality training is perhaps the possibility of obtaining data in a much simpler and more effective way, to cross with those obtained on the field to improve training activities and bring them to a new level.

What characterises this mode, in fact, is the ability to add or remove elements to the routines, stratifying the reality with which the athlete must confront to simplify or step up their exercise. In the field, this is much less easy to do, if not impossible.

The most striking example is the one related to the possibility of injury, due to contrasts with real opponents, which causes athletes to save themselves or to adopt defensive strategies that then in the race they will have to abandon if they do not want to adversely affect their performance.

That's why these platforms will be a great success for the workout of many sports in the coming years. It cannot even be ruled out, therefore, that those who have empty and vacant premises may not soon convert them into virtual training gyms, which could profoundly redefine the very meaning of the term training and sports spaces.
