This historical involvement with professional athletes and a variety of sporting disciplines has proved fundamental to our ability to design innovative technology and products, gathering of valuable insights and feedback from athletes.
Technogym's Olympic Stories
Sydney 2000 marked Technogym’s first Olympic Games as Fitness Equipment Official Supplier. Each training centre for each of the different disciplines was equipped with our latest products, including Selection Line, which we launched at the Games. This comprehensive range of selectorized strength equipment has since become an icon of sport training. Selection - after several new releases integrating new technologies and digital capabilities - remains one of the most popular lines of equipment in the world to this day.
The Athens 2004 Olympic Games was significant thanks to a growing focus on technology. A year earlier Technogym had launched the Wellness TV – the first TV screen integrated into cardio equipment – providing engaging entertainment options to users for the first time. Athletes at the Olympic Village were able to make use of this technology to enhance their training experience.
Technogym first experienced the Winter Olympic Games during Turin 2006. In Turin, Technogym equipped several different training centres within the urban venues downtown, dedicated to stadium sports such as hockey, speed skating, figure skating, etc; while in the mountains area Technogym equipped two different Olympic Villages, one for alpine skiing and the other one for cross country ski and related disciplines. Skater and skill-intensive discipline athletes showed a strong interest on Kinesis, the Technogym discipline to train strength, balance and flexibility at the same time thanks to a free cable system and the FullGravity technology.
Technogym ventured into China with the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games; an exciting development for an Italian-based company. China invested heavily in the infrastructure and facilities for the Games, creating more than 20 Wellness Centres for the athletes, all of which incorporated our most innovative products and technologies. Aside from this, Beijing 2008 marked a significant development for Technogym: this was the beginning of a collaboration with the Olympic committee to start leveraging sport, not only as a competitive discipline, but as a way to involve the whole population in physical exercise and a wellness lifestyle.
London 2012 was a pivotal Games for Technogym, thanks to our recent significant advancements in technology and the continued focus on enhancing the influence the Olympic Games can have on the wellness of the hosting nation and beyond. Technogym had just launched mywellness, our open cloud platform connecting operators and end users. This was a ground-breaking innovation for the industry, creating a new 360° digital user journey which enhanced the end-user experience and provided operators with a host of tools to improve and manage their business.
All equipment at the London 2012 athlete training centres was connected to mywellness cloud, meaning that physical activity could be measured and tracked for the first time. This gave us the platform to launch a social campaign to get the whole population moving. The ‘I Pledge’ initiative, run in partnership with the British Olympic Association and promoted by Olympic athletes, encouraged members of the public to make a pledge to improve their health and lifestyle by fulfilling a specific sporting goal or physical activity target in 2012 and beyond.
Durin the Olympic Games of Rio 2016, athletes once again utilised the connectivity of our products to build on the success of the ‘I Pledge’ campaign. As well as supplying over 15 Wellness Centres for all the athletes, Technogym launched the ‘Let’s Move for Rio’ initiative, to directly impact the local Rio de Janeiro population. Through mywellness cloud, athletes at the Olympic Village and gym-goers all around the world, were able to ‘donate’ their movement on connected Technogym equipment during the Games. As a result, Technogym donated 600 pieces of equipment to 22 public gyms in Rio’s most disadvantaged communities to promote sport and physical activity.
PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Games have marked Technogym’s seventh Olympic experience. Technogym has equipped 13 Wellness Centres for the athletes to train prior to and during the Games. A total of over 1000 pieces of equipment have been available for 3000 athletes travelling from 85 different countries and competing in 15 disciplines. Alongside its role as Official Supplier to the Games, Technogym has also been the brand of reference for the athletic preparation of Marcel Hirscher, the Austrian alpine skier, 6 times world champion and the entire Austrian and Italian teams.
