Myra A. Nimmo BSc PhD

Myra Nimmo is Professor of Exercise Physiology and Dean of School of Sport Exercise and Health Sciences, Loughborough University.Following a physiology degree and returning from competition in the Olympics, it seemed natural to commit to a career in exercise science. After early work on skeletal muscle metabolism and the physical challenges faced by athletes, the work naturally led to more basic science into the mechanisms behind the adaptation and specifically to the role of inflammation and recovery in the exercise adaptation process. These basic science studies have been paralleled by work closer to the second translation gap with multidisciplinary teams.Current work continues to investigate the interplay of exercise and inflammation and how these mechanisms can be manipulated to optimise exercise interventions in a number of populations including elite athletes and those suffering from Type 2 diabetes. Professor Nimmo is currently Chair of the Sport and Exercise Medicine National Centre a consortium of 3 Universities and 3 National Health Service Trusts in the UK committed to attracting research funding, advising government and providing educational and clinical services to elite and recreational athletes, NHS and private patients, clinicians and allied healthcare professionals. She is also co-Director of the Sport Research Institute in Singapore a collaboration between NanyangTechnolgical University and Loughborough University.
