Sailor on course for a world record

A sailor of the Sri Lanka Navy is to set a Guinness world record as he prepares to run on a treadmill continuously for 24 hours covering 257 km.

Leading Seaman H. M. S. K. W. Bandara will make his attempt to set his world record on November 28 at 5.00 p.m. at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.

Speaking at a media conference held on Tuesday at the Navy Headquarters, the Navy sports union secretary Commodore A.A Ruwan Dias stated that the Navy would always extend its fullest support to talented sportsmen like Bandara.

He also expressed his gratitude to Technogym Pvt Ltd for sponsoring this sportsman and the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation.

A treadmill will be provided free of charge by Technogym Pvt Ltd, stated its executive officer Roshan De Silva An initial sponsorship check amounting to Rs. 1,000,000 was handed over by the Petroleum Corporation Sales Manager Krishantha Wickramasinghe to Commodore Dias.

The 27-year-old Sailor, who is a resident of Galkiriyagama, works at SLNS Pandukabaya and is a marathon runner. Earlier he was involved in cycling and later changed to athletics and joined the Sri Lanka athletics squad. According to Sri Lankan athletics ranking he occupies the 5th place.

Officials of the Sri Lanka Athletics Association and the Guinness World Book of Records will attend the event.

Gallons of water are being pumped into Bridgend County Borough Council's new swimming and teaching pool at Ynysawdre ahead of its grand opening next month.

The slow process of filling the new 25 metre state-of-the-art pool will take around a week to complete.

It is one of the final jobs before the 6m pound Ynysawdre Pool and Fitness Centre opens on October 13.

As well as the pool, the building will host a multi-purpose dance studio and the No Limits Fitness Suite with the Technogym Wellness System which helps users follow and view their own exercise programmes, personal goals and progress.

The old Ynysawdre pool closed in June 2005 and the new building has taken 80 weeks to complete from demolition to opening.

Visitors will have the opportunity to swim in an ultra-modern 25 metre pool which is accompanied by a teaching pool, changing village and seating for 140 spectators.

The Beijing Paralympic Games Starts

The Chinese capital today rolls out its red carpet for 4,000 Paralympians who will excite and inspire the world in the next 11 days.

The athletes come from 148 nations and regions. And Beijing will buzz the same excitement evident during the Olympics for the 20 events at the Paralympic Games, kicking off at 8 pm tonight.

China send 332 athletes to the Beijing Paralympic Games, its largest team ever and more than any other competing country: Italy, for example, has 84 athletes.

In the Paralympic Village many athletes continue to train preparing the competitions starting 7th September.
