Kinesis. When Design get Inspired

Source: Gary Hamel, Wall Street Journal

Gary Hamel from the Wall Street Journal, who everyday explains to us new ways of managing , talks about the importance of great design from his personal experience.

One of his exemples is our - brilliantly designed - Kinesis.

Here is an extract of the article dedicated to Kinesis:

Earlier in the month I attended a conference in Milan.
There I came across Technogym, an Italian manufacturer of exercise equipment.

I've been in lots of gyms, and most exercise equipment looks like it was designed by a half-blind medieval dungeon master - but not so Technogym's Kinesis, a multi-purpose workout machine that attaches to a wall, and is about the size of an upended pool table.
The Kinesis has four shiny arms that swing out from each corner of the device.
Cables run out across the upper arms, down to the lower arms, and then back into the base.
Six sliding acrylic handles are positioned at various points along the cables and allow the user to perform more than 200 toning movements.

Cardio workouts? A new business opportunity

People who go to the gym often manage to do so by carving a few hours out of a busy day, and they calculate their exercise time down to the minute.

On any given day you yourself can see how hard it is to catch the eye of people leaving the locker rooms with printed notices and posters on the board or left on the reception desk. But delivering up-to-date information about initiatives and events in your club is crucial for promoting your business.

Will your client be exercising on the treadmill for the next 20 minutes? With Communicator by Technogym, these 20 minutes will be fruitful for you too.

Communicator is the new tool for marketing communications that can capitalise on the only time your users will truly be open to reading your messages: as they exercise.

The application is supported by the Visio digital platform, and transforms the touch screen on cardio equipment into a virtual space for advertising and promoting your facility.

As easy and intuitive as sending an e-mail, with Communicator you can quickly write messages about new products or services and send them instantly – and wirelessly – to the screens on the cardio equipment as it is being used.

Numbers count, turn them into business!

Running a fitness club means being in a never-ending race – always on the lookout for new solutions to provide the best service to members and maximise retention.

To do this effectively, you need to have at your fingertips the factors affecting retention: they will help you take the right actions and then gauge their results and effectiveness.

Various studies have shown you can improve retention by taking the following steps:

  • assign workout programmes consistent with users' aspirations and objectives
  • renew training programmes as soon as they expire
  • assign appropriate workloads, weights, speeds and slopes
  • ensure that users are able to complete their assigned programme
  • check members' attendance record and if necessary change their schedule
  • arrange checking and measuring sessions and regular interviews
  • stay in direct, ongoing contact with club members

The trainer's role is key to all of the above – this means it is essential to define work protocols and user management processes and ensure that all planned activities are carried out smoothly and in coordination.

Clearly, this requires having a huge amount of data and of course, the time to analyse them.

So how can you find out just what your facility members are looking for?
A less than motivating workout routine might discourage attendance, but there is little time for asking questions in between sessions. You can't afford to wait!

Club 2.0: il Club del futuro si basa sulle aspirazioni

What is the solution then?
Help club members focus on their aspirations and use them to design personal fitness plans.
This is the revolutionary Club 2.0 approach, a fantastic concept that allows you to really understand what makes your customers move.
